Ingenious remote-controlled machines now allow service reservoirs and slow sand filters to be cleaned without the need to take them out of supply.

In some cases traditional drain-down cleaning and inspection methods can pose logistical problems or require difficult, labour-intensive and expensive bypass operations. Other issues include loss in capacity or overload elsewhere in the system.
